Investigating the element of place in the novel Guantanamo written by Yousuf Zidan from the perspective of semiotics and based on Peirce's approach

Abstract

The science of semiotics is the knowledge of examining semantic implications. In the novel "Guantanamo" by Youssef Ziedan, which primarily revolves around the events taking place in a prison bearing the same name, the author delves into the difficulties and hardships faced by the prisoners.The concept of space and its psychological, social, and political implications hold a prominent position in the novel.The title of the novel itself serves as a spatial signifier, emphasizing the significance of this concept in the text.The present study aims to elucidate the spatial signs in the novel "Guantanamo" and explore their interactions with other elements and inner layers of the text. The research is conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, encompassing both theoretical and analytical dimensions.The theoretical part entails the definition and explanation of semiotic concepts and the element of space, while the analytical aspect examines various types of space and their connotations.The findings indicate that space plays an indispensable role in the novel "Guantanamo," carrying diverse psychological and socio-political implications, depending on the mental states of the characters, the spatial element can be categorized into mental, elevated, inhabited, uninhabited, multidimensional, and vacuous spaces, each associated with the characters' emotional states. Moreover, the novel prominently features three types of signs, as proposed by Peirce: symbolic, indexical, and iconic signs, which can be readily traced throughout the narrative.Among these, symbolic signs have been allocated the highest frequency among the triad of signs.element of place in the novel "Guantanamo" by Yousuf Zeidan and finally answer the following questions.
