Kristian Norberg Schultz (1926-2000) is a Norwegian theorist and architect who offers a new approach to explaining and interpreting the concepts of home, the spirit of place, and habitation. From his perspective, a sense of place is a quality of space that can enhance both space and place, making them memorable. The novel The Length of the Night (1960) by Jamal Mirsadeghi (born 1933), a writer and researcher of Iranian fiction, is considered one of the realistic stories of the 1960s. Most of the narrative, adventures, and main events of the story take place in two traditional and old houses in Tehran during the second Pahlavi era. Mirsadeghi describes houses with courtyards, pools, ponds, flowers, plants, and trees enclosed by high walls. The present paper uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the components and examples of the spirit of place and the concept of home and residence in Mirsadeghi's novel The Long Night. According to the results, in the novel The Length of the Night, based on the theory of the spirit of place and the concept of dwelling by Norberg-Schulz, houses convey peace and pain together, and nightmares and dreams coexist in them. Houses and their inhabitants benefit from the spirit of a romantic place, and the house and its inhabitants have a direct influence on each other.

Mirsadeghi narrates the entire novel story of The Length of the Night in the Tehran Garden House of the 1960s. The Length of the Night story progresses in such a way that the house and its inhabitants impact each other directly. Also, in the novel The Length of the Night, the house is a place of peace and plays a major role in the identity of the inhabitants. Based on the theory of the concept of habitation, Norberg-Schulz discusses the philosophical and architectural importance of "habitation". He explores the deeper meanings of habitation that remain beyond the mere physical dimensions of living in space and encompass the cultural, existential, and symbolic dimensions of architecture
